"For Where two or three have gathered together in my name, I am there in their midst."
- Matthew 18:20
Ekklesia is God’s Presence.
An ekklesia differs from a traditional Bible Study or “growth group.” A Bible Study focuses on obtaining knowledge. Growth groups often focus on a process (i.e., worship, Word, prayer requests, etc.). An ekklesia is centered on God’s presence. Ekklesias make time and space for the presence of God. God’s presence was so crucial to Moses that he was willing to forego the Promised Land if God did not go with him. He said, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here (Ex 33:15).” In the New Testament, God fills his ekklesia with his presence through the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4). It was the empowering presence of God that fueled the early church to proclaim the gospel to the world.
Ekklesias are Spirit led, Scripture fed, and presence focused.
We attend to God’s presence in our community through connection, worship, God’s Word, service in the spiritual gifts, and the Sacraments. Jesus said, “For where two or three have gathered together in my name, I am there in their midst (Mt 18:20).”
